Graduate Support

A strong emphasis of the MMZ has been on the support of graduate students, which includes training in Graduate Schools as well as international workshop formats for establishing networks of doctoral and postdoctoral students.

Three Research Training Groups have already been established at the MMZ:

• Makom - Places in Judaism (DFG) as the first graduate funding format,
• followed in 2010 by the Walther Rathenau Kolleg "Liberalism and Democracy" (Friedrich Naumann Foundation).
• The Ludwig Rosenberg Kolleg on the overarching topic "Labor Movement and Judaism" started its work at the MMZ in summer 2013 with the support of the Hans Böckler Foundation. Some of the work is currently still being supervised in a structured colloquium format.

German Israeli Archival Exchange Colloquium

Every two years, the "German Israeli Archival Exchange Colloquium" (GIAEC) takes place, which was hosted by the IGdJ Hamburg for the first time in 2014. It is part of a long-term project for the promotion of young German-Israeli researchers, which is organized jointly with the Institute for the History of German Jews in Hamburg, the Leo Baeck Institute in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University (TAU). The program brings together five doctoral students from Germany and five doctoral students from Israel to discuss their research projects and to be introduced to archival research in selected German and Israeli archives and academic institutions, respectively. The visit to Germany will be followed by a visit and meeting of all participants in Israel six months later.

PhD projects

Miriam Rürup's professorship is home to several doctoral projects. In addition, other habilitated staff members of the MMZ accompany doctoral theses and are involved in the promotion of graduates in an advisory capacity.
