Aschkenas
Zeitschrift für Geschichte und Kultur der Juden
The biannual journal Aschkenas is edited by Hans Otto Horch, Robert Jütte, Miriam Rürup, Werner Treß, and Markus J. Wenninger and has been published in conjunction with the MMZ since 2021. Doris Vogel serves as the editor.
Aschkenas (originally the Hebrew term for Germany) sees itself primarily as an organ of German-language research on Jewish history and culture, which (after the Nazi period) has only begun again with renewed vigor since the late 1970s, but it also brings English contributions. Thematically, it concentrates on the history and culture of Ashkenaz Judaism (i.e., the Judaism of Central and Western Europe and Northern Italy), and chronologically on the period from the gradual emergence of Ashkenaz Judaism in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages to the emancipation of the Jews in the 19th century, but also publishes contributions that go beyond this temporal and geographical area. The journal, which is published annually in two issues, contains essays, source editions, literature and research reports as well as collective reviews of current new publications.
