One year after the devastating attacks on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, Edut 710 has become a pioneering initiative for the documentation and preservation of survivors' testimonies. Edut 710 – Hebrew for “testimony October 7” – is a volunteer-based organization of documentary filmmakers, historians, archivists and scholars dedicated to recording the testimonies of those affected and ensuring that their stories are preserved with ethical, legal and technical integrity.
During the event, selected video excerpts of testimonies documented by Edut 710 volunteers will be shown, providing first-hand insights into the experiences of survivors. This will be followed by members of the Edut 710 leadership team sharing their experiences of building a digital archive in the midst of unfolding crises.
There were significant challenges not only in interviewing survivors who had suffered severe trauma, but also in building a digital archive in real time. The speakers will discuss the complexities of collecting and curating these narratives and the ethical considerations of balancing comprehensive data collection with the emotional well-being and privacy of survivors. In light of heightened debates about how the events of that day should be remembered and honoured, the discussion will also address the emerging questions and tensions surrounding social and political forms of commemoration in Israel one year on.
